Yleistä tietoa

Seleeni toimii useissa kehon entsyymeissä. Se suojaa elimistöä tulehdussairauksilta ja elimistölle haitallisislta aineilta, kuten raskasmetalleilta ja karsinogeenisilta (syöpää aiheuttavilta) aineilta. Seleeni ylläpitää maksan normaalia toimintaa, näkökykyä sekä ihon ja hiusten normaalia uusiutumista.

Maaperän seleenimäärä vaihtelee ja siksi lannoitteisiin lisätään seleeniä tarvittava määrä. Seleeniä saadaan viljasta, lihasta, kalasta, sisäelimistä, äyriäisistä ja maitotuotteista esim. juustosta. Liian suuri saanti aiheuttaa myrkytyksen, jonka oireita ovat väsymys, pahoinvointi, hiusten lähtö, kynsivauriot, iho-oireet, hampaiden irtoaminen ja hermostomuutokset. Hengitykseen voi tulla valkosipulin haju.

Vaikuttavat aineet

Seleeni esiintyy ravinnossa erilaisina yhdisteinä, usein aminohappohin liittyneinä. Ravinnossa esiintyy mm. selenometioniinia, selenokysteiiniä ja natriumseleniittiä.

Vaikutus ja käyttö

Seleeni toimii aktiivisena osana elimistön glutationiperoksidaasi-entsyymissä, joka kiihdyttää hydroperoksidien hajoamista. Seleeni on osallisena prostaglandiinien tuotannossa ja ehkäisee tulehdussairauksia. Seleeni suojaa elimistöä sitä vahingoittavilta aineilta, esim. karsinogeeneiltä ja raskasmetalleilta, ja voi näin ehkäistä sairastumista esim. syöpään. Lisäksi seleeni huolehtii maksan normaalitoiminnasta sekä ylläpitää imuunijärjestelmää, normaalia näköä, ihon ja hiusten terveyttä. Seleeni ja E-vitamiini vahvistavat toistensa vaikutusta.

Seleeniä käytetään sydän ja verisuonisairauksien ehkäisyyn ja hoitoon, esim. aivohalvaus ja valtimonkovettumatauti (ateroskleroosi). Sitä käytetään myös estämään erilaisten syöpien kehittymistä, esim. eturauhas-, maha-, keuhko- ja ihosyöpä.
